Phase 5 connections and startup

We are now coming to the last stage of this intervention, which is also the most awaited. We are going to connect the power plant, fill up on the various fluids and...... START IT UP !

Due to the perfect finish Eric asked for, it goes without saying that the assembly of a "separate oil filter kit" was a given for this vehicle. It made the reassembly of the group in the car all the more easy.
On the photograph on the right-hand side, you can notice the unusual path of the battery lead arriving to the starter. This positioning makes it possible to shelter it behind the sheet of protection (absent at the moment of the photograph). To keep it in the desired position we used a collar secured on the lower fastening screw of the starter, and we also had to modify the folding of the sheet. A high temperature ceramic / silicone sheath comes to supplement the efficiency of the whole.

The routing, the protection and the fixing of the clutch and of the engine oil ducts were obviously carried out with the greatest care. Original mounting flanges, plastic collars, clamps, all is good to avoid interferences susceptible of generating wear.

During the reassembly of the half-trains, threaded shock absorbers and flexible devices of aviation brake are installed. The lower suspension arms, provided with a reinforcement in half tubes over all their length (not easily visible on the photograph) received an anti-corrosive treatment by hot galvanization.
As for the gearbox drive, it was modified to Renault Sport standards with the assembly of a whole with ball-end which is in perfect conformity with the make, especially the ball-end which is located at the end of the drive (indicated by an arrow on photo above). It is 10 in diameter, requiring the welding of a bigger part at the end of the bar and the realization of special spacers allowing the connection between the size 10 ball-end and the gearbox selector using a size 8 screw, since the selector cannot be enlarged to size 10. All these parts are of course available as a complete do-it-yourself kit (it is nevertheless necessary to be able to weld the threaded end to 10). You can find the reference and the price under our catalogue’ heading.

The installation of the water hose connections and the filling up on the various fluids present no particular interest so we didn’t take pictures of those last steps. (for those of you who don’t know it yet, let us remind you that the quantity of gearbox oil is 2.8 L and that one should never fill up to the stopper) The time has come to start it up. As for any new engine the oil pressure is right to the starter (without the spark plugs, for its sake) with the ignition module disconnected. Once the oil pressure warning light is out and the pressure gauge is on, it is time to put the ignition back and to connect it and then.... Action! The temperature setting is then carefully adjusted and supervised with the greatest attention, the bleeding of the cooling circuit is finalized (it is never perfect when the engine is off). Once the right temperature has been reached, the ignition timing is set. To do this, a good dephasing stroboscopic lamp is sufficient but the highhest degree of accuracy is required. A timing on 3000 rpm is essential on a prepared engine. I advise the same care for series engine, though the value is obviously not the same. The adjustment of the mixture richness does not require anything specific, even in the 200CV version, the original recommendation of a value going from 1.5 to 2 is quite appropriate.

A good inspection of the whole after these first turns makes it possible to check that the quality of the A side is equivalent to that of the B side. The care taken with all the unseen elements often determines the quality and the reliability of a work.

The reassembly has come to its final phase, screen sheet, anti-closure bar, hot air evacuation tube and other details are put back in.

Before the reassembly of the tank covers, a first rolling was carried out, the tanks were filled and their water-tightness was carefully controlled. Even the last details will not be neglected, such as gluing back the insulation, assembling the galvanized fittings of the bumper, washing the carpets (Eric, owner of this car, made a point of doing that himself).

The End. Enjoy yourself, Eric.
